Don't Skip Slide Decks for Market Research
executives recently, I found a wealth of information in slide-decks
posted to the Internet. "Slide decks" is a term used in business, but
commonly known as the PowerPoint presentation.
Key industry executives can be rather elusive when trying to gather
information about a market or industry, but if you are lucky, you can
find their Powerpoint presentations from conference keynote
addresses or other group meetings and presentations posted on the
Internet. Do not skip over these documents when you get your Google
results. A load of information including statistics, lists, strategies,
and sometimes even confidential information can be released.
There are two key sites that you should search for slide deck
information: SlideShare and Docstoc. People use SlideShare to upload
and share PowerPoint, MSWord, PDF documents and professional
videos for free. Users can even add audio, in foreign languages, when
they make a webinars. Docstoc is a community for people to find and
share professional documents, too. You can find more than slide decks
here. Available are free legal documents and free business
documents, too. In fact, take it a step further, and be sure to post
your own slide decks to these sites and generate marketing leads.
One final tip, for Google users in particular, did you know you can
limit your search to Powerpoints? From the Google home page, click
on Advanced Search. Enter your search terms and look down the page
for File type. From here you can select the .ppt format to limit the
search to Powerpoint files. Let me know how it goes.

Advanced Google For Business Research
Behind the fabulous Google search engine is another fabulous place called Google Labs. Here Google keeps the beta versions of some very interesting new free and often mobile applications.
Here are my top Google Labs picks for your business research purposes; use them in your reports and presentations, and impress your boss or prospective clients and collegues:
1. Google News Timeline. This web application allows users to view news and other data sources on a browsable, graphical timeline. Available data sources include recent and historical news, scanned newspapers and magazines, blog posts, sports scores, and information about various types of media, like music albums, books and movies. Sample.
2. Google Trends. See what the world is searching for. Google Trends allows you to enter up to five topics and see how often they’ve been searched on Google over time. Learn how frequently your topics have appeared in Google News stories, and in which geographic regions people have searched for them most. Where in the world is your product or service most popular?Wondering what the new trends are? Use the Hot Searches or Hot Topics and see a snapshot of what’s on the public’s collective mind by viewing the fastest-rising searches or what is getting the most "buzz". Sample "assisted living" search results. Sample top Hot Search "world cup usa".
3. Google Squared. This search search tool helps you quickly build a collection of facts from the Web, for any topic you specify. Facts about your topic are organized into a table of items and attributes; called "squares". Use drop lists to customize these Squares to see just the items and attributes you're interested in. See the websites that served as sources for the information in your Square. Save and share Squares with others. Great for reports. Sample table on "beatles songs".
4. Google Insights For Search. Using a basic key words search, Google will analyze a portion of worldwide Google web searches from all Google domains to compute how many searches have been done for the terms you've entered. You can choose to see data for select Google properties, including Web search, Images, Product search, and News search. On the results page, you'll see a graph; a breakdown of how the categories are classified; lists of the top searches and top rising searches; and a world heat map graphically displaying the search volume index with defined regions, cities, and metros.
5. Google Fast Flip. This web application lets users discover and share news articles. It combines qualities of print and the Web, with the ability to "flip" through pages online as quickly as flipping through a magazine. It also enables users to follow friends and topics, discover new content and create their own custom magazines around searches.
6. Google Public Data Explorer. Makes large datasets easy to explore, visualize tool to create visualizations of public data, link to them, or embed them in your own webpages. Embedded charts and links can update automatically so you’re always sharing the latest available data. List of all available datasets.
